Panj Badgir Ab Anbar (cistern)

A traditional cistern with five wind-catchers, an example of architecture adapted to southern heat.

Historical

The Panj Badgir cistern shows how islanders supplied water and coped with heat before desalination and piped water. The name comes from the five wind-catchers built above the reservoir to draw air in and keep it cool.

A visit is usually only a few minutes, so it works best as part of a half-day history loop with Harireh and the Kariz. At about six and a half kilometres from the centre it is an easy short taxi or car hop.

How to get there

Distance from Kish centre
6.7 km, about 9 min by road
Distance from Kish airport
6.5 km, about 11 min by road

Approximate road distance and time without traffic (public routing data, calculated 13 Oct 2026). Real time varies with traffic and Kish speed limits.

By car

About 6.7 km from the centre; by car it sits on the way to Harireh and the Kariz so you can see all three in a row.

Without a car (taxi, agency, bicycle)

A short taxi from the centre, or an agency car. Ask the driver to include Harireh and the Kariz in the same agreement. A bicycle is possible for confident riders over 7 km, but not recommended in the heat.

Best time to go

Early morning, before the heat builds, for a comfortable walk around.
