Kariz (Kish underground city)

An old underground water system, part of which is open to visitors.

Historical

The Kish Kariz is also called the underground city because of its subterranean spaces. It was originally a water-carrying channel and part of it is now a visitor route. The air inside is cooler than outside, which makes it a different experience on hot days.

It has steps and narrow passages, so slippery shoes, strollers or wheelchairs may be a problem. Since it lies on the route with Harireh and the cistern, it is often the last stop of a half-day history loop.

How to get there

Distance from Kish centre
6.1 km, about 8 min by road
Distance from Kish airport
5.8 km, about 10 min by road

Approximate road distance and time without traffic (public routing data, calculated 13 Oct 2026). Real time varies with traffic and Kish speed limits.

By car

About 6.1 km from the centre; by car it is on the Harireh route and only about 2.5 km from it.

Without a car (taxi, agency, bicycle)

A taxi from the centre, or one taxi arranged for Harireh and the Kariz together. For the next sight (such as City Park) you will need a fresh taxi.

Best time to go

Midday in the hot season, since it is cooler inside; ask the venue about queues and hours.
