What is renting a car in Kish like and what should I ask before signing?
Updated:
Usual documents
Market reports say Iranian renters usually need a national ID card and a licence at least two years old. Minimum driver age is reported as 19 to 20 at most companies and up to 24 for luxury cars. Foreign renters need a passport plus an international or home-country licence.
Deposit and insurance
Most companies take a cash deposit instead of a cheque; reports range from about 8 million toman for economy cars to 20 million or more for luxury. Kish rental regulations cap the deposit at 50 percent of the car's value. A smaller separate deposit for fines is sometimes held for 10 to 30 days.
Third-party insurance is mandatory, but body cover varies. The common basic cover has a high excess, and value loss and downtime may fall on the renter; even a scratch can lead to over 30 million toman of liability (market-report estimate).
Signs of a licensed company
None is a guarantee, but their absence is a reason to be careful:
Steps
- Ask for the Kish free-zone licence and membership of the Kish rental operators' association.
- The car should carry the official hologram and rental booklet.
- Get a written contract; messages or verbal agreement are not enough.
- Under the association's rules a licensed company must answer complaints within 72 hours.
- The car must have valid inspection and insurance and be no older than 8 years.
Delivery and last questions
Ask about airport or hotel delivery before booking and get cost and hours in writing; we promise nothing as free or always available.
Steps
- Is daily mileage capped or unlimited?
- How is the fuel level measured at pickup and return?
- Is VAT in the quoted price or extra (market report: ten percent)?
- Can the car be swapped or the contract cancelled if it has a fault?
- How are traffic fines settled on the island? (See the driving guide.)
